The National Maritime Museum is committed to protecting your privacy. We operate in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998 and the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

The text below describes the ways in which we collect information from you when you use the service, and what we may use it for.

What data do we collect from you? 

We collect data from you ('user data') when you register to receive updates from us. This data can sometimes comprise personal data about individuals, to which UK data protection laws apply. These terms and conditions and our data protection policy describe Royal Museums Greenwich's approach to fulfilling its obligations under those data protection laws.

Our use of user data 

We will use user data we collect from you only in accordance with the following guidelines:
  • to provide the updates to you
  • to provide and improve our service to you
  • to notify you of any changes to our terms and conditions of use.
  • to send you information about our other products and services if you so wish. 

Tracking our visitors

We use Google Analytics including Google Analytics Demographics and Interest Reporting to monitor how people use our websites and aggregates general statistics about customers, traffic patterns and related site information in an anonymous form.  Any demographic reports produced using this data will be used to determine a better understand of our website traffic and visitor needs and tailor future content and functionality.


This website uses cookies. A cookie is a small file placed on your computer by a website. Cookies allow the Museum to improve the quality of your visit to our websites. If your browser permits it you can set your computer to reject cookies, although this may affect the quality of your visit.

The Museum uses MailChimp to provide our e-mail newsletter service. In order to sign up to this service, an individual has to submit personal information about themselves (e.g. name, e-mail address, interests). 

This personal data is collected by MailChimp on behalf of the Museum. The data is stored on a secure MailChimp server. MailChimp are not permitted to use the data for their own purposes nor to sell or distribute it on to any other individual, organization or business under any circumstances.

We will only send you our email newsletter if you have given us your permission to do so. You can 'opt out' of the newsletter at any time by clicking on the 'Unsubscribe' link at the bottom of each newsletter.

Online donations

We have enabled online donations to be made to the Museum through Justgiving. They operate a strict privacy policy and will never pass your personal details on to anyone, including the Museum, without your express consent. Find out more on the Justgiving website.

Booking tickets online

Our online booking service is provided by Syx ReCreateX. They collect personal information on behalf of the Museum to process each transaction and only use personal data where it is necessary to fulfil your order. Syx do not disclose personal data to other parties.


We will use your personal details to administer your Membership and to send Membership material by post such as your Membership welcome pack, Members’ magazines, What's On guides and Members’ Appeal information.

We will never pass on your personal details to other organisations. If you are a Member of the Flamsteed Astronomy Society, your email address will also be used by the Flamsteed Committee to communicate with you. Your personal details are stored in the Syx RecreateX database for the duration of your Membership and for 24 months after your Membership expires; after that we will dispose of your details securely.
